Community Safety and Justice Policy

The Community Safety and Justice Policy division serves as a resource to the Department of Justice and Public Safety in the areas of policy development, and community and social development, as follows:

  • Provides policy analysis and advice to the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General;
  • Coordinates departmental criminal justice policy development;
  • Provides leadership and federal/provincial liaison regarding justice research, statistics, and information systems;
  • Represents the provincial government at the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Continuing Committee of Officials on Human Rights;
  • Administers the Police Act and Regulations;
  • Develops policing policy for the Province, coordinates police training on new federal initiatives, and contributes to national policing policy;
  • Serves as OAG liaison for Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) criminal justice officials committees and working groups;
  • Participates in the healthy child development strategy;
  • Provides resources to Aboriginal justice and public legal education;
  • Provides consultation on crime prevention/community safety;
  • Provides consultation to community and government agencies; and
  • Encourages community involvement in justice issues.
