Sheriff
Sheriff Services is a publicly funded service of the Legal and Judicial Services Division, of the Department of Justice and Public Safety whose functions and directions are derived from the Sheriffs Act.
The primary goals of Sheriff Services are to ensure that courts in the province are secure and safe environments, and that Sheriff Services is recognized as a leader in Court Bailiff Services in Canada.
These goals are achieved through continued enhancement of services and business processes by employees motivated through inservice training and development, and by using up-to-date legislation and the latest business techniques in the performance of these job functions.
The following are the objectives of Sheriff Services:
- To provide dignified and quality security to the courts by:
- providing training for employees to preclude any prisoner escapes;
- ensuring employees are aware of policy on the care and handling of prisoners; and
- ensuring employees are aware of policy on the securing of court rooms.
- To provide quality service to the courts and others in the areas of Jury Management, Execution of Court Orders, Writs of Execution, Maintenance Enforcement Orders, etc., by:
- conducting annual quality of service reviews with court judges, and
- conducting annual quality of service reviews with Directors of Departments, requiring assistance of Sheriff Services.
- To provide quality service in the collection of outstanding fines by:
- conducting annual review of legislation impacting job role;
- receiving annual input from the Registrar of Supreme Court; and
- receiving annual input from the Director of Highway Safety.
- To providing quality Bailiff Service throughout the Province by:
- conducting annual review of service from clients, and
- conducting annual review of service from employees providing this service.
