Maintenance Enforcement Program

Mail Service Information

Due to the pending postal strike, alternate arrangements have been made for clients who receive support payments by cheque.  To pick up their cheques at government offices in local communities, please contact the Maintenance Enforcement Program at (902) 894-0383.

What if a parent isn't paying child support?

The term "maintenance" includes all support payments, both spousal and child, that are contained in an order made by the court or in a separation agreement.

Maintenance Enforcement Act

The provincial government passed a law called the Maintenance Enforcement Act in 1988, making it harder for those who do not comply with their maintenance obligation to avoid their responsibility.

The program operates free of charge. There is no guarantee of success in collections, although every effort will be made to enforce registered orders and agreements.

The Program's Purpose

The program does not represent either a support payor or recipient. The program's mandate is to receive, register and enforce orders/agreements in such manner as appears practicable. The Maintenance Enforcement Program manages payments on the file and enforcement of the file if payments are in arrears.

Location

The Prince Edward Island Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEPS) is housed within the Family Law Centre, 1 Harbourside Access Road, PO Box 2290, Charlottetown, PE C1A 8C1. Residents of Prince County may also make their support payments at the Court House, 108 Central Street in Summerside. Staff at the Summerside Court House will remit your payments to MEPS for processing.

Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during summer and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the winter.
