Planning for a Sustainable Future
The Report of the Commission on Land and Local Governance recommended that a new provincial strategy for conservation be developed. This process is being led by the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC).
'Planning for a Sustainable Future' will be a strategy to protect nature, set development policies and secure the best possible future for Islanders. A new sustainable development strategy will help to inform provincial land use policies by identifying principles for decision making and setting direction for protecting land and resources. The Land Use Policy Task Force and the EAC will be working together to seek the views of Islanders on their vision for a sustainable PEI.
It is important for Islanders to identify ways to meet our current and future environmental challenges. The EAC has led a series of stakeholder consultations that have resulted in the production of the foundation document. The foundation document is one step in the creation of a sustainable development strategy. It provides context about the critical issues being faced on PEI and it contains a series of questions that are meant to stimulate discussion.
Background Documents
The Environmental Advisory Council encourages Islanders to provide their views on a new sustainable development strategy for the province.
- Read the PEI Planning for Sustainable Future - Foundation Document
- Read the most recent State of the Environment Report
As you read through the document, please give thought to the following broad questions:
- Why should we protect nature?
- What are the threats to nature that you see?
- Do you have the information, desire or time to do more to protect our Island environment?
- What can the private sector, Islanders and governments do to better protect nature?
- Which legislation, policies and government programs are working or not working?
- What do you see as the solution to engaging more Islanders in the protection of our natural resources?
