Master Packaging expands production

Premier Robert Ghiz announces provincial funding for the expansion of production capacity at the Master Packaging plant in Borden-Carleton.

Someone in China just sneezed and pulled a tissue out of a box made in Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island.

Somewhere in the southern United States, a busy family took a veggie pizza out of another box put together on the shores of our province.

Master Packaging in Borden-Carleton, continues to grow and produce some of the world's best corrugated and folding carton packaging. The high quality boxes produced here are in demand by some of the world's largest, most familiar producers of things like tissue, beer, pizza and french fries.

Recognizing the benefit this business has to the Island economy, the Government of Prince Edward Island is assisting the company to boost its production ability.

Currently, 168 people have year-round, full-time work at the bustling plant in rural Prince Edward Island.

"Master Packaging has grown steadily over the past 17 years and is now a very important part of our provincial economy,"  said Premier Robert Ghiz.  "The addition of new equipment at the plant will allow it to take its processing capacity to the next level and to keep up with increasing demand for its product. This is a great step for our exports, for our manufacturing industry and for the Island economy as a whole."

The Government of Prince Edward Island, through Finance PEI, is assisting with a $7.1 million interest bearing, repayable loan. With this investment in new equipment, the company will be able to meet growing customer demand around the world. The latest expansion includes a new state of the art employee training facility to help develop employee skills.

"Our purpose at MPI is to be a valuable asset to our customers with a passionate and engaged workforce focusing on continuous improvement. This enabled us to be a world class leader in folding carton production. I am very proud of our team for earning well deserved international awards for excellence in Flexographic Printing against competitors as far away as South Africa and new Zealand."

Because of its high quality product, Master Packaging has earned the confidence and the business of some of North America's most familiar brands.

The company's dedicated team of over 369 employees in Borden-Carleton and Charlottetown, as well as Dieppe, New Brunswick, proudly service the packaging requirements of customers throughout the Atlantic Provinces, the U.S. and Central Canadian marketplaces.
