Certified Island Beef as boutique as it gets

A chef from the Culinary Institute slices into a delicious cut of Prince Edward Island Certified Beef.

They’re probably the most laid back cows in Canada, grazing on green hills under big clear skies in the salt air. Their lives are not too stressful, they eat a pure, clean diet and don’t have to endure harrowing long truck trips crammed in like sardines.

This stress-free lifestyle gives their beef an old fashioned, natural taste, like it should taste, says Pearse Dolan, who distributes Prince Edward Island Certified Beef to high end customers worldwide.

The Culinary Alliance is working with Dolan, of Dolan Foods to distribute the brand to high end restaurants and specialty meat shops in central and western Canada.

Prince Edward Island Certified Beef’s “flavour profile” is different than meat from anywhere else, he said. “It is meaty, tasty the way beef used to be, that’s what you’re getting out here.”

Launch of new Prince Edward Island Certified Beef brand

A new Prince Edward Island Certified Beef brand was launched to promote the Island's high quality beef products.

The new brand is a joint initiative of the PEI Culinary Alliance, the PEI Cattle Producers, the Atlantic Beef Products Plant, and the departments of Agriculture and Forestry and Innovation and Advanced Learning.

The recent launch of a new Prince Edward Island Certified Beef brand will return premium prices to Island cattle producers and help solidify Prince Edward Island's foothold in the niche market of premium beef.

Prince Edward Island Certified Beef is “as boutique as it gets” and already in demand by foodies worldwide, says celebrity Chef Mark McEwan, a longtime fan of cooking with Island beef.  “Prince Edward Island is an isolated wonder of nature,” he said.

Agriculture Minister George Webster says he is proud to be associated with such a high-quality Island product. “This (new brand) will be a tremendous benefit to the entire Island beef industry.”

Summerside Cattle Producer Ivan Johnson will be one of the farmers raising Island-born calves in a natural, stress-free environment.

He says quality feed contributes to the taste of the beef. The Island's pristine environment makes its products appealing to discerning consumers. "Consumers are demanding to know where their food comes from, they like to put a face to the product."

The new certified brand is a joint initiative of the PEI Culinary Alliance, the PEI Cattle Producers, the Atlantic Beef Products Plant, and the departments of Agriculture and Forestry and Innovation and Advanced Learning.
