Minister welcomes full time West Prince physician

Health and Wellness

Dr. Declan Fox will be joining the complement of physicians in the West Prince region basing his full time practice at the Tignish Health Center, says Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Fox to the Western Region on a full time basis beginning October 1, 2014,” said Minister Currie. “Dr. Fox is well known to the people of West Prince and has provided valuable locum support to the region for many years. Dr. Fox has decided to relocate with his wife to the region and practice full time.”

“After 14 years of intermittent locum work on PEI, mostly in West Prince, I decided to hang up my shingle on a permanent basis in Tignish Health Center, providing family health services plus some emergency department shifts and in-patient care at Western Hospital in Alberton,” said Dr. Fox. “The welcome from the community and the dedication of the Health Center co-op board were major factors in my decision, as was the availability of highly skilled staff to work with me in the clinic.”

“This is great news for West Prince residents,” said Marilyn Barrett, Health PEI’s director of primary care and chronic disease. “We look forward to on-going collaboration with Dr. Fox and his team doing chronic disease prevention and management and health promotion activities for the people of Tignish and surrounding areas.”

Dr. Fox is relocating from Northern Ireland. Recruitment for the West Prince Region has been a priority for the Recruitment and Retention Secretariat and efforts are continuing to fill vacancies in the complement. Since 2007, government has recruited and retained 30 new family physicians to the province.

“Our government remains committed to ensuring a family physician for every Islander,” said Minister Currie.
