Various camera clubs existed in Prince Edward Island during the mid to late twentieth century. The best known of these was likely the Charlottetown Camera Club which operated from 1952 to 1968. The Charlottetown Camera Club held regular meetings and was very active within the Island community, putting on many shows and displays. Some of the largest events included projects for the Charlottetown Centennial in 1955 as well as Charlottetown Conference centennial celebrations in 1964. The largest and most ambitious project, however, was the Charlottetown Camera Club’s 1967 centennial project entitled “The Island from Cartier to Centennial.” This massive photographic salon of over 1500 images opened at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery on 2 May 1967 and ran until the end of the month. After the show ended, the images and negatives were donated to the Public Archives and Records Office.

In creating the 1967 exhibit, members of the Charlottetown Camera Club drew upon a number of sources, including various Island museums, private collections, Camera Club members’ own collections, as well as published works. Members photographed the images they gathered and created prints for the salon. The display also included some original photographs by members of the Camera Club, including some which depict 1967 centennial events. In all, the Club acquired 1565 photographs for their 1967 exhibition.

In celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Public Archives has selected 150 images from the Charlottetown Camera Club centennial project. This exhibit gives a sense of the richness of this collection and offers insight into how members of the Charlottetown Camera Club viewed the Island, themselves, and their stories in 1967.
