Notice to Charlottetown’s Business Men from the Royal Visit Advisory Committee

Islanders greatly anticipated the Queen’s visits. In the months leading up to the big event, newspapers were full of articles about Her Majesty: her hobbies, her relationship with Prince Philip, her style, her upbringing. They would also give advice on what to wear and how to behave should one get to meet her. Businesses were also caught up in the excitement. They would print ads in The Guardian welcoming the royal couple to PEI, and decorate their businesses with the royal standard. Royal visits were not simply opportunities to meet Canada’s sovereign. They served as a chance to show off the famous Island hospitality on an international stage.
