CNR snow plow, 1916

One of the largest obstacles faced by the PEIR was the heavy and drifting snow. Substantial snow falls would often paralyse the railways, leaving would-be passengers and parcels stranded at nearby stations. While certain engines were equipped with snow plows, it would frequently take manual effort to shovel a clear and safe path for the trains. Here is an image depicting one such instance, as a group of men shovel snow from in front of a CNR snow plow train.
