Susanna Yates of Belfast, Ireland, had at least two sons: Alexander and James. James was born in 1835 in Belfast, Ireland. After spending some time in Saint John’s, Newfoundland, James moved to Prince Edward Island in 1870. James married Mary A. Taylor of Saint John’s and the couple had four children: Alexander (1870-1938); William J. (1863-1900); Mary S. (1866-1895); and Robert J. (1868-?). James fought in the Crimean War as a private in the 82nd regiment and received Sebastapol and Turkish medals. Upon discharge, James enlisted with the Royal Canadian Rifles. James and his family resided in Pownal, Prince Edward Island where he worked as a shoemaker. James died 17 March 1913 in Charlottetown.
Robert J. Yates married Alberta Robertson. The couple lived in Boston, Massachusetts where Robert worked as a carpenter and builder in the partnership Yates & Jones. Robert and Alberta had two children: Alberta (born 1895) and Robert or “Robbie” (born 1897). By December 1900, Mr and Mrs. Yates’ children were living in Prince Edward Island; Alberta with her uncle Theodore and aunt Christie in Lot 46 and Robbie with his aunt Margaret in Kingsboro. Mrs. Yates died in Boston between December 1901 and March 1902.
Robbie married Vivian Young and the couple had four children: Margaret, Beryl, Bertie, and Robert. Robbie died in the PEI Hospital in Charlottetown on 29 August 1976.
Alberta married Edison Rose in 1920. Alberta and Edison had three children: Mildred, Anne and Edgar. Alberta was a very active member of her church and community. She taught Sunday school, was a member of the East Point W. W. S. and the Historical Committee of her church. She was also a lifetime member of the Red Point Women’s Institute and former Board Member of the Provincial Women’s Institute. She taught 4-H work and ran a chick hatchery with her husband on their farm in East Baltic. Alberta died 25 January 1987.
