Biographical history

Arthur P. Johnstone was born in Long River, Prince Edward Island, on 27 July 1922, the son of William E. Johnstone and Vivien E. Howatt. On 6 November 1944 he married Amy Johnson with whom he had two children, David and Ruth. He farmed in the Long River area until 1956 when, for health reasons, he left farming and became the consignee for McColl Frontenac Oil Company.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of two books written by Arthur P. Johnstone which chronicle life in Long River PEI in the first half of the twentieth century. The first entitled "My memories of growing up on a farm in Long River PEI" includes vignettes about all types of farming including fox ranching, agricultural equipment, schools and education, roads, different modes of transportation, food and clothing, and social events. The second "History of Long River, Prince Edward Island" gives a brief history of the Long River followed by genealogical information about the families in the area.
