William Louis Bailey was born in Rosseau, Ontario, on 15 August 1882 and attended the University of Toronto and Queen's University. He graduated from Queen's in 1904 with an M.A. Bailey began his university teaching career at Cornell University, and also taught at the University of Wisconsin, University of Colorado, Grinnell College, and Garrett Biblical Institute. Bailey was professor of Sociology at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, from 1919 through retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1947. After retirement, Dr. Bailey was Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland, the Pentagon and the University of Pittsburg. Dr. Bailey's research centered on urban development and the translation of the Gospels from Greek to contemporary English. Dr. Bailey married Edith Olivia (Eva) Reid of Kingston, Ontario, a sister of Florence M. (Reid) Goodwill. Dr. and Mrs. Bailey had one daughter, Florence Elizabeth Bailey Reist. Annual visitors to Prince Edward Island since the early 1900s, Dr. and Mrs. Bailey retired to Charlottetown, taking up residence with Mrs. Florence Goodwill, in the late 1940s or early 1950s, until the time of their deaths. Dr. Bailey died 17 October 1982. Mrs. Bailey died 3 June 1976 at Charlottetown. Both are buried at Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston, Ontario.
