History
The Canadian Handicrafts Guild was founded in 1905 in Montreal with the purpose of supporting the ongoing development of traditional crafts and promoting public interest in the value of artistic workmanship.
The Prince County Branch of the Canadian Handicrafts Guild was established in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, on 15 March 1911 at the residence of Mrs. R. T. Holman. The following members were elected to serve on the Executive Council: Mrs. Schurman (President), Mrs. Brennan (Vice President), and Miss. Holman (Secretary-Treasurer).
The Prince County Branch was involved in producing many forms of craftwork, including crocheting, hooking, knitting and embroidery. The branch regularly exhibited displays of its work at local agricultural fairs like the Prince County Exhibition, and sold some of the items it produced at a store in Summerside that was operated seasonally by members.
