Administrative history
The Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, was founded in 1964 as Canada's National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation who gathered at the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. Located on Queens Square, the Centre has been home to the Charlottetown Festival since 1965, including the Festival’s flagship production "Anne of Green Gables - The Musical." In addition to theatres, the Centre includes an art gallery, restaurant, and gift shop, and serves to showcase Canadian visual and performing arts.
For more information about the history of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, please see Frank MacKinnon’s "Honour the Founders! Enjoy the Arts!" (Charlottetown: Confederation Centre of the Arts, 1990) and Edward MacDonald’s "Cradling Confederation: The Founding of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown" (Charlottetown: Confederation Centre of the Arts, 2013).
