History
The DeSable Women’s Institute was organized at a meeting at the school house in DeSable, Prince Edward Island on Tuesday, 2 March 1948. Nine ladies from the district attended to hear the Assistant Supervisor of the P.E.I. Women’s Institutes, Miss Mary Lea Boswell, explain the history of Women’s Institutes. Members of the first executive were Mrs. Melville Bell (President), Mrs. Dan Dart (Vice President), Mrs. Clifton Ince (Secretary), Mrs. Ivan MacKinnon (Director), Mrs, Nicholas Gillis (Director), Miss Charlotte MacKay (Director), Mrs. Walter Gould (Auditor), Mrs. Robinson MacFadyen (Auditor), Mrs. Walter Gould (Convener - Citizenship), Mrs. Robinson MacFadyen (Convener - Agriculture), Mrs. Nicholas Gillis (Convener - Child Welfare), Mrs. Borden Walton (Convener - Home Economics), Mrs. Ivan MacKinnon (Convener - Dramatics). The first meeting was held on 5 April 1948 at the home of Mrs. Melville Bell.
