History

The Telephone Company of Prince Edward Island was incorporated in 1885. A controlling interest in the Company was purchased by the Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company in 1911. By 1974, some 40 smaller companies which had sprung up to meet the demand for service had been acquired by the larger company. In 1929, in preparation for transatlantic telephone communication, and following negotiations with American Telegraph and Telephone Co. to purchase the franchise of the Eastern Telegraph and Telephone Co., the Telephone Co. of Prince Edward Island became the Island Telephone Company.
