Biographical history
Brenton Harold “Jack” Turner was born 24 September 1889, son of Henry Willis and Florence (Love) Turner of O’Leary, Prince Edward Island. Turner became interested in photography at an early age and taught himself to use a box camera. He worked as a clerk in his father’s general store H.W. Turner’s on Main Street in O’Leary and also spent some time in western Canada prior to enlisting for the war in 1915. Turner served overseas with the Second Canadian Siege Battery during World War I. Turner was able to capture images of the effects of war with his smuggled camera. After the war, Turner returned to Prince Edward Island where he farmed in Knutsford for 35 years. Jack married Donna Dennis on 5 December 1919 and had one daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Lorne Elliott). After his retirement from farming in 1952, Turner again turned to photography as a hobby and won first prize in the Centennial Photography Contest. Turner was a member of the O’Leary Royal Canadian Legion and the O’Leary United Church. Jack Turner died 6 October 1989 at the Community Hospital, O’Leary.
