Biographical history

James MacDonald leased 100 acres of land from James F. Montgomery on Lot 34, Prince Edward Island, approximately five miles distance from Charlottetown. Little is known of the family but James and his wife [Catherine?] apparently emigrated from Scotland around 1811 to settle on Lot 34 where they engaged in mixed farming.

Custodial history

These documents were discovered in the office of Dr. John Bovyer in the early 1970s.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of receipts to James MacDonald from the agents of James F. MacDonald for rent payments (1856-1863), two letters from Robert Ogilvie in St. John, New Brunswick, to James MacDonald (1853) reporting hard times and asking for assistance, and one letter from Mrs. MacDonald (1818) to relatives in Scotland describing their crops and stock, her household activities, the severity of winter and the prices of various commodities.
