Notice biographique
Laura Jean Gordon was born ca. 1872 in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, to Archibald Gordon and Margaret Simpson. She graduated from the Worchester City Hospital Training School for Nurses in Worchester, Massachusetts, United States of America, in 1898. Laura served as a nurse in the Canadian Army Medical Core during World War I in France and England. Shortly after the war, Laura went to Manitoba to nurse and later joined her sister in Toronto where she worked at the Belmont Retirement Home. Laura retired to Cascumpec, PEI, where she lived the remainder of her life on the family farm. Laura Gordon died in 3 August 1953 and was buried in the Bloomfield United Church Cemetery.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook, loose items, and photographs belonging to Laura Gordon. In addition to newspaper clippings and a few photographs, the scrapbook includes records related to Laura’s service as a nurse in World War I, such as leave passes, a 1917 Christmas card, a handwritten menu from the No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital Christmas Day 1918 dinner, and other items. Much of the scrapbook relates to the war, but it also includes material that pre-dates World War I such as information about Worchester City Hospital where Laura studied nursing and the death of King Edward VII in 1910. There is also one file of loose items that were removed from the scrapbook prior to donation, including a program for The Dumbells in "Biff, Bing, Bang!" (1919-1920), and 11 photographs, including Laura Gordon’s Worchester City Hospital Training School for Nurses graduating class photo, 1898.
