Maple Leaf Women's Institute

Biographical history

The Travellers Rest Women's Institute was organized on 25 July 1913. It included members from Travellers Rest, Sherbrooke, and New Annan, Prince Edward Island. The name Maple Leaf was chosen by the Institute on September 25, 1913. In 1921 it was decided to divide into two Institutes, with Travellers Rest retaining the name Maple Leaf. In 1926 an annex was built to the community hall which was maintained through the years by the Institute as a club room for the entire community. The Institute has remained active to date, involved in improvement of schools and community, support of education, red cross work, the holding of picnics, teas, and socials, and the contribution to various charities, particulaly those involving children.

The fonds consists of two series: 1) Minutes of the Institute including membership rolls, 1913-2002 and 2) Miscellaneous files including conveyances, updates to the history of Travellers Rest, etc.

Records of the Trustees of Travellers Rest School #103 were removed from this fonds in 1994 and transferred to Record Group 39: School Board Units
