History
The New Annan Womens Institute was organized with eleven members in the schoolhouse in New Annan, Prince Edward Island, on 29 April 1915. In 1972 The Institute was instrumental in the setting up of a used clothing depot for the Kensington area. The depot operated out of the basement of the Kensington Post Office in space donated by Public Works. The committee adminstering the depot drew for members from the Womens Institutes of Freetown, Wilmot Valley, Kelvin, Springbrook, Spring Valley, Margate, French River, Hamilton, Malpeque, Darnley, Baltic and Seaview as well as New Annan. Over the twenty-two years of its existence it raised over $25,000 for community institutions and programs. It ceased operation in 1994 because of the projected cost occasioned by the new waste watch program.
