Administrative history

The North Tryon Women’s Institute was organized 9 December 1927 in North Tryon, Prince Edward Island. The first meeting was at the home of Mrs. Lila Gamble. Gertrude Inman was elected as the first president and Miss Pearl Ramsay as the secretary treasurer. At that time meetings were held on the first Wednesday of the month. The Institute took special interest in the local school, purchasing new desks, chemical toilets, a piano, tables, duplicator, playground equipment and bicycle racks. Many years later, the Women’s Institute purchased that same two-room schoolhouse to be used for community events. The Women’s Institute also supported Red Cross swimming lessons and music instruction in the area schools. In 1977, the Institute was awarded $1550.00 by the PEI Rural Beautification Society, as a result of a major community beautification project. The project saw a number of community buildings fixed up, and a number of others properly demolished. In 1973, the Women’s Institute published a community history called “History of North Tryon, Prince Edward Island, 1663-1973". In 1980, the Institute began hosting an annual Canada Day celebration. The Institute created the North Tryon Historical Association in 1985, which resulted in the 1993 publication of the two-volume book "Remember Yesterday: A History of North Tryon, Prince Edward Island, 1769-1992". The 1993 executive for the Association was Ethel Thompson (President), Glen Thompson (Secretary), and Hazel Robinson (Treasurer). The North Tryon Women’s Institute’s organizational records for the first thirty years were destroyed in a house fire.
