Scope and content
This series consists of the papers of the various Peake business which operated in Prince Edward Island. The papers contain invoice books, shipbuilding contracts and agreements, insurance papers on vessels and buildings, as well as correspondence over a period of years on the state of the industry, on business, and on the economy. A large quantity of material relates to the mercantile side of the business and the operations of the store. Peake was involved with a number of other firms and the records of these companies have for the most part disappeared with the exception of the material in this series. Included are: Steam Navigation Company - share ledgers and vessel passenger lists; Steam Mill Company - minutes of the-board of directors, share lists, contracts, and correspondence; and Gas Light Company - share lists. Also, a small amount of material connected with the Post Office is included. These papers cover a period from approximately 1829 to 1870.
