History

John Lefurgey Read was born in 1878 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He was the son of captain, merchant, and politician Joseph Read (1849-1919), and Sarah Carruthers (?-1911). Having sailed his father's ships in the coastal trade, John was commissioned by the Canadian government to deliver the ice-breaker "S.S. Minto" to the Russian government during the first World War. He was later appointed captain of the ice-breaker "S.S. Prince Edward Island," and the "S.S. Charlottetown," which sailed between Borden and Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick. Read also operated a dairy farm in Borden. He died of leukemia in 1950 and is buried in the People's Cemetery, Summerside. He married Nellie Hilson (1880-?) on 19 June 1901. They had five children: Georgie, Nellie, Sadie, Adele, and John.
