Biographical history

Ruth Aitken Bristol, wife of Roger P. Bristol, is the daughter of John Astor and Harriet Aitken, and was born on the 27 January 1901 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. John Astor Aitken was born in Fortune Bay, Prince Edward Island, on the 20 November 1867. He married Harriet Varley on the 21 September 1897 in Boston, Massachusetts. Ruth lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the 1960s and in Cockeysville, Maryland in the 1980s.

The collection consists of genealogical information concerning the Aitken family which was collected by Ruth Aitken Bristol. The files are arranged into the following series:

1. Aitken family history
2. Obituary notices
3. Photographs
4. Miscellaneous historical documents

Included are an autobiography written by John Astor Aitken between 1959 and 1961, with comments written by Ruth Aitken Bristol in 1969; obituary notices and genealogical notes concerning the Aitken and Townsend families; and twelve photographs of Aitken family members, tombstones and homes.
