John Townshend emigrated from Berkshire, England to the New England States circa 177-?. His journal entries of 1786 indicate that his travels began in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he may have lived. John's brother James Townshend (1739-1806) emigrated from Berkshire, England to Prince Edward Island with his wife Elizabeth (1724-1795) in 1775. John, Elizabeth, and their five children settled on land in New London.
