Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a photograph of the Wilmot Valley Bridge, Prince Edward Island, taken in 1921. A group of school children are shown enjoying a break from their lessons. The names of these pupils are Roy Simmons, Therin Simmons, Darius Hogg, Jennie Hogg, Lillian Hogg, George Hogg, Earle Hogg, Grace Sobey, Lillian Sobey, Melbourne Sobey, Elmer Waugh, John Burrows, Jean Caseley, Floyd Caseley, Hubert Agnew, Gladys Wright, Harold Day, Pearl Waite, Haley Waite, Keith Waite, Myrtis Picketts, Gladys Picketts, Willard Picketts, Kathryn Clark, Scott Clark, Horace Clark, Wyman Clark, Ralph Hogg, Frank Jardine, Austin Jardine, Olive Jardine, Annie Jardine, and Vernon Wedge.

In 1913, when it was rumoured that a magnificent steel pillared bridge with a span of 70 feet was soon to be built across the Wilmot River, in Prince Edward Island, many of the members of the community objected to its construction. They claimed that wooden bridges served their purpose well and the material could be produced locally. Therefore, there was no need for such an expensive structure. Despite their protests the steel bridge was built. The approaches were built by Philip and Andrew Arsenault at a cost of $445. Other expenses including local labour and materials were $132.82. The great steel girders, trusses and rails were not included in this listing, therefore, the total expenditure was much higher.
