The official history of the geographic name Bideford (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Bideford (Sett., P.O.) was adopted i n Place Names of PEI, 1925. Bideford (Sett.) was confirmed 2 august 1944 on 11L/12.Status changed to Locality in 1960 Gazetteer.Status confirmed as Locality when bideford became part of the Community of Ellerslie-Bideford in 1977. After Bideford, Devonshire, England, hometown of Mr. Ellis who settled on the soutern side of Lot 12 with Mr. Chanter (also from Bideford) in 1818.- PN of PEI, 1925
