The official history of the geographic name Stanhope (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):
Stanhope (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925. Confirmed 12 December 1939 on 11L/6.Status changed to Post Office in 1960 Gazetteer.Post office closed 1968.Stanhope became part of the Community of North Shore in 1974.Status changed to Locality 23 October 1989 on 203-8. After William Stanhope (1719-79), Viscount Petersham, 2nd Earl of Harrington. - PN of PEI, 1925.
