The official history of the geographic name Elmira (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):
Elmira (Sett.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Confirmed 7 January 194 7 on 11L/8.Status changed to Hamlet in 1960 Gazetteer.Status changed to Comp act Rural Community in 1973 Gazetteer.Status changed to Locality when Elmira b ecame a part of the Community of Eastern Kings in 1974. Name changed from Portage in 1872 to Elmira after Elmira, New York, at the sugge stion of George B. McEachern, school teacher.The name has no local significanc e but was selected for its euphony from a gazetteer.- PN of PEI, 1925.
