The official history of the geographic name Cornwall (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Cornwall (P.O.) opened in 1855.Adopted as a Settlement in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Status changed to Hamlet in 1960 Gazetteer.Incorporated as a Village in 1966. Status changed to Town 1 April 1995.Confirmed 17 June 1996 on 11 L/3. Encompasses the Communities of North River and Eliot River.
