The official history of the geographic name Belfast (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Belfast (Village) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Statuschanged to Loc ality 1 April 1969 on 11L/2.Status confirmed when Belfast became part of the C ommunity of Belfast in 1972.
