The official history of the geographic name Freetown (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):
Freetown (P.O.) was open in 1855.Freetown (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Status changed to Village 2 August 1944 on 11L/5.Status changed to Hamlet in 1960 Gazetteer.Status changed to Locality 23 October 1989 on 203-8. The land in this district was freehold, that's how it got its name.- (Postmaster, 1905)
