History of the Name

The official history of the geographic name Margate (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Margate (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Confirmed 2 Augu st 1944 on 11L/5.Status changed to Sett. when P.O. closed 22 May 1948.Status changed to Locality 23 October 1989 on 203-8. The first settler, named Smith, came from Margate, England about 1790. (Place N ames of PEI, 1925.)
