History of the Name

The official history of the geographic name Portage (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Portage (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925. Confirmed 3 December 1946 on 21I/9.Status changed to Hamlet in 1960 Gazetteer.Status changed to Locality when Portage became part of the Community of Lady Slipper in 1983. Portage is the translation of the Micmac name - Oonigun. An Idian portage route from Cascumpeque (now Cascumpec) Bay to Egmont Bay started from Portage River.- PN of PEI, 1925.
