History of the Name

The official history of the geographic name Pownal (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):

Pownal (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Changed to Pownal (Village, P.O.) 23 April 1940 of OBF 0142 and 1316(4). Status changed to Settlemente 25 April 1946 on 11L/2.Confirmed 6 May 1947 on c. 4405.Status changed to Locality 23 October 1989 on 203-8. After John Pownall, secretary to the Board of Trade and Plantations, 1758 - 1761.Later secretary of state.Thomas Pownall (1722-1805), governor of Massachusetts, was a younger brother.Misspelled Pownal and Pownell. - PN of PEI, 1925.
