The official history of the geographic name Tignish (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):
Tignish (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1925.Status changed t o Town 3 December 1946 on 21I/16.Status changed to Village in 1960 Gazetteer. Status changed to Locality when Tignish became part of the Community of Tignish in 1983.
