Program Information and Overview

Each of us has experienced the benefits of a mentor, whether through a formal program or by seeking advice from someone whose experience could provide insight on career decisions.

The purpose of the P.E.I. Government mentor program is to improve individual and organizational performance of the P.E.I. public service and build internal capacity in support of the human resource plan.

The program focuses on creating an environment that offers opportunities for employees to reach out to other employees. Both mentors and mentees can learn and grow by connecting with employees with common interests and needs.

What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a relationship or partnership where the focus is on the needs of the mentored participant.

Mentoring encourages individuals to actively pursue personal and career goals by linking them with people who can act as role models and advisors. The mentoring program is different from job shadowing or supervision because mentors do not normally provide job-specific knowledge and skills, and only spend a few hours with their mentees every month.

Mentoring provides value to both the mentee and mentor. Specifically, the value of mentoring to the mentee includes:

  • Knowledge and skill development
  • Insight into the organization’s culture
  • Expanded personal networks
  • Improved career planning
  • Positive and constructive feedback on professional and personal development
  • Increased self-awareness, self-discipline and growth

The value to the Mentor includes:

  • Increased skills in leadership and coaching
  • Increased transference of expertise and experience
  • Expanded networks and a broader perspective of the organization
  • Increased ability to translate values and strategies into productive actions
  • Investing in the future of the public service

Mentoring is about an experienced person taking an interest in another person's development, sharing expertise, values, skills, perspectives, and proficiencies.

Who Should Participate?

The Mentor program is available to staff at all levels. We invite you to join in sharing leadership, ideas, and expertise while building a strong and supportive Government culture.
