Labour Relations Training
The PEI Public Service Commission is pleased to present four modules of the Labour Relations Series October 2012 and January 2013. These modules are open to managers, with separate sessions for civil and health sectors. If you are uncertain as to whether you are eligible, please discuss with the HR Manager for your department or division. Register early, as these popular sessions often fill up quickly.
Managing & The Collective Agreement: This is an introduction to managing in a unionized workplace, designed to orient supervisors and managers to the obligations and considerations arising in the unionized workplace such as understanding and interpreting the collective agreement, understanding management and union roles re collective agreement, creating awareness among supervisors and managers of their impact on the labour relations climate at work, and appreciating the principles of grievance management for dispute resolution under the collective agreement.
Performance Management: This is an introduction to performance management practices based on strong communication skills, this module emphasizes performance management as an on going cycle, explores performance management tools available to managers, identifies appropriate processes for responding to performance issues, and distinguishes non-disciplinary, performance management issues from misconduct.
Managing Absenteeism & the Duty to Accommodate: This is an introduction to the concept of the duty to accommodate and its application to the key elements of successful attendance management such as when to use aggregated absenteeism data, and individual data, what is excessive absenteeism, how the duty to accommodate impacts decisions, the need for good quality information and respecting the accommodation process.
Employee Misconduct & Discipline: This is an introduction to the discipline process under a collective agreement, reviews the distinction between disciplinary and performance management situations and responses, examines the purpose of discipline and progressive discipline and the concepts of just cause, mitigation and aggravation.
