French Language Services

What services are available through French Language Services?

  • French Language Training Program
  • Oral proficiency assessments
  • Monthly newsletters are circulated to all bilingual employees with activities to help them practice their French, news about training, grammar tips and tools
  • Monthly lunches for bilingual employees, who don't have many opportunities to practice their French, can get together and converse with others.


What does the French Language Training Program offer?

  • Three classroom training sessions throughout the year, fall, winter, and spring,are available to classified and casual civil service employees, including the health sector;
  • Training offered through the Coll ge Acadie ÎPÉ;
  • Locations in Charlottetown and Summerside; classes may be offered in other regions if there are sufficient registrations;
  • Levels are Beginner 1-2-3-4, Intermediate 1-2-3-4, and Advanced 1-2, as well as a lunchtime maintenance program; and
  • Other language training options may be available if classroom training does not meet your needs.


Is there other training available in French?

Occasionally, other courses offered to bilingual staff in French such as grammar refreshers, writing tools, Antidote software training, etc. as specific needs are expressed.


Can I have my oral proficiency assessed?

  • Employees can request a French oral proficiency interview at any time by contacting the Public Service Commission. Interviews can be conducted in person or over the telephone, and generally last about twenty minutes.
  • A certificate and rating summary are sent to the employee. The supervisor is sent a copy of the rating summary and the information is entered into the human resource management system.
  • Re-evaluation may be requested after a period of six months.
  • If you obtain Advanced, Advanced Plus, or Superior levels in Oral proficiency, you are eligible to apply for Designated Bilingual positions within government.



For Bilingual Employees

Specialized courses such as grammar refresher, writing tools, etc... will be announced on the Bilingual Network Bulletin throughout the year. For advice on specific training needs, contact French Language Services at 902-368-4168.


Oral Proficiency Assessments

The Province is working to build upon its bilingual capacity to meet the needs of the Francophone population. There are benefits to being listed as a bilingual employee, whether or not you are in a bilingual position.

Any employee wishing to have a formal assessment of spoken French ability may contact French Language Services at 902-368-4168 for an appointment. Information about the assessment process and goverment HR policy regarding bilingual employees can be found in the French Language Proficiency Evaluation Policy.
