World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity to increase our understanding of how to support an older person who may be experiencing abuse, says Community Services and Seniors Minister Valerie E. Docherty.

“This year, in association with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Seniors’ Secretariat invited Island organizations to apply for a community grant to host an elder abuse awareness event,” said Minister Docherty. “It is my pleasure to announce that seven organizations will each receive $250 to support their efforts to raise awareness about this serious issue.”

2012 grant recipients:

• Prince Edward Island Association for Newcomers to Canada

• Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI

• La Coopérative d’hébergement le Bel-Âge

• Silver Threads Seniors Club

• PEI Seniors Safety Program

• North Milton Women’s Institute

• PEI Home Economics Association

Earlier this week, His Honour, the Honourable H. Frank Lewis, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island hosted a presentation by Chairperson of the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention Dr. Philip Smith.

“I was pleased to attend the presentation by Dr. Smith on recognizing and taking action on the abuse of older adults and I encourage all Islanders to learn more about this issue in order to be prepared to assist a neighbour, friend or family member,” said Minister Docherty. “Understanding, preventing and taking action on the abuse of older adults is a responsibility we all share.”
