Adopt A Highway

In the Fall of 2003, the Government of Prince Edward Island built on its strong foundation of commitment to protecting the environment by creating the Adopt-A-Highway Program. This same year, the Federated Women’s Institute of Prince Edward Island celebrated 30 years of encouraging Islanders to “Be Proud. Keep It Clean”; The Women’s Institute had shown such positive results with its annual tradition of road-side clean-ups that the government of P.E.I. started funding and co-ordinating this program to show its support and encourage more Islanders to participate.

The Adopt-A-Highway program serves to encourage businesses, community / youth groups, environmental groups, or any group full of eager volunteers to participate in contributing to the beauty and enhancement of their community. Not only will participation in roadside clean-ups help to build volunteers’ character, it will also engage others to follow. In turn, organizations will receive identification with special distinctive roadway signs placed at each end of their adopted section. It has been shown through research that citizens are less likely to litter once they were aware that volunteers were cleaning up after them.

Participating groups will adopt a five kilometer section of roadway for four years and conduct a two clean-ups per year: once in the spring, once in the fall. The Department of Transportation and Public Works will supply Road-Work Safety Signs, Safety Vests, Safety Guidelines, Garbage Bags and Garbage Pick-up. Groups will also be required to complete Clean-up Reports.
