Gas Tax

Administrative Agreement on the Federal Gas Tax

The original Federal-Provincial Gas Tax Agreement was announced in February 2005. It outlined how local governments in PEI would receive a total of $37.5 million over five years. In 2009, the Province signed an extension to the original Gas Tax Agreement, securing an additional $60 million to be distributed from 2010-2011 to 2013-2014. Following these early programs, the Federal government announced that the Gas Tax Program would become permanent, and in the summer of 2014 the Province and Federal government signed the “The Administrative Agreement on the Gas Tax Fund”. The program will see municipalities on PEI benefit from $78 million over the next five years.

The new Gas Tax program funding will be divided into four major components:

  • The Direct Allocation Fund (DA)
  • The Notional Allocation Fund (NA)

Ultimate Recipients moving funds from approved projects under the Direct Allocation or Notional Allocation components will be required to submit the Gas Tax Fund Transfer Request Form.

  • Provincial Municipal Services (Roads and Bridges)
  • Municipal Strategic Component (MSC)
