1838 HMS Malabar runs aground off Cape Bear. After jettisoning her 36 guns, she is re- floated with the assistance of local shipowner Joseph Wightman. His feat earns him the nickname "Sir Joseph Malabar," and a gift of plate from the British government worth £500.
