The Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation, founded by the Museums Act of 1983, reconstituted the Heritage Foundation, putting Government representation on the board and expanding the mandate to include museum work in the areas of human and natural history. The museum is actively involved in collecting, preserving, displaying and interpreting the Province's past at various sites throughout the Province. Beaconsfield is the administrative headquarters of the organization.

Applications for the PEI Register of Heritage Places are vetted by the Heritage Officer, and are reviewed by the Heritage Places Advisory Board who makes recommendations to the Minister responsible for heritage. The Heritage Officer also maintains the www.peihistoricplaces.ca website and is the Registrar of Historic Places for the province. The Heritage Officer coordinates the annual Provincial Heritage Fair held each May for students in Grades 5 through 9. Further information on these programs is found online.
