Consolidate water-related legislation

Decisions on the use of water resources are currently made using a mixture of regulations and policy that have evolved over several decades. While groundwater (water from the ground) and surface water (rivers and streams) are closely linked, each is managed separately.

The Water Act will bring several pieces of legislation together, including:

  • Elements of the Environmental Protection Act;
  • Water Well Regulations;
  • Drinking Water and Wastewater Facility Operating Regulations;
  • Sewage Disposal System Regulations; and
  • Watercourse and Wetland Protection Regulations.
