Changes to farm vehicle registrations will save time and money for both farmers and taxpayers, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Alan McIsaac.

“The vast majority of farmers renew the registration for their farm trucks and trailers in the spring, and waiting for the processing of the registration can be very time consuming for farmers particularly for large fleets,” says Minister McIsaac. “To increase efficiency, government is providing farmers with the option of paying a one-time only fee for registering these vehicles.”

Farm vehicle owners can now choose to pay a one-time only $100 fee for each farm plated vehicle, rather than the yearly $10 fee. The fee would not be paid again unless there is a new owner of the registered vehicle.

The farm plate issued to the vehicle is transferable and refunds are applicable if the ownership of the vehicle transfers within 10 years of registration.

Processing the registration documents once, rather than periodically, could also reduce the number of customers in the Access PEI offices in the spring, which is the busiest time of year.

“With over 2,600 farm trucks and trailers registered in the province, this is great news and the Federation of Agriculture was pleased to work with the province in making this happen,” said John Jamieson, Executive Director of the Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture. “It is important to reduce the regulatory burden on farmers when possible, and now farmers will no longer have to take valuable time out of their day to renew these vehicles each year.”
