The new Green Road footbridge and the multi-use pedestrian path under the Bonshaw bridge will provide easier access to an expanded provincial park in the Bonshaw hills, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Alan McIsaac.

“The expanded park will include the existing Bonshaw and Strathgartney Provincial Parks, along with other lands that feature some of the most spectacular natural areas in our province,” said Minister McIsaac. “This park will be a new experience for Islanders and visitors, with opportunities for year-round active living and recreation such as hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.”

The new Green Road footbridge across the West River is now complete. It replaces the old timber bridge that was washed away due to flooding. A multi-use pedestrian path under the Bonshaw bridge is also complete.

The Bonshaw Hills Public Lands Subcommittee continues to seek public input on a management plan for properties to be included in the expanded park. These lands feature a rich mix of forest ecosystems in various stages of succession, some with relatively untouched understory vegetation and terrain, and others in need of restoration and management.

“These two pedestrian bridges will make it easier for Islanders to explore the natural beauty of the Bonshaw hills, while ensuring sensitive habitat locations are protected,” said Bonshaw Hills Public Lands Subcommittee co-chair Jackie Waddell. “It is our hope that Islanders will continue to be engaged in the ecological and heritage conservation, outdoor recreation and educational potential for this unique mix of forest ecosystems.”
