Premier Wade MacLauchlan today announced that the Government of Prince Edward Island has contributed $25,000 to the relief effort in Nepal.

“The people of this province have been deeply shocked and saddened by the widespread devastation and by the tragedies that are being experienced by the people of Nepal,” said Premier MacLauchlan. “There is a ongoing need for humanitarian aid and assistance as the people of Napal struggle from the impacts of the worst disaster in 80 years.”

Premier MacLauchlan said the attention of the world has shifted to Nepal over the past month since the first of two major earthquakes shattered people’s lives and destroyed key infrastructure facilities. He said that ongoing efforts are needed to assist the many humanitarian organizations in the disaster response.

The provincial contribution is being made through the Canadian Red Cross. The funds will be used by the Red Cross in Nepal to treat survivors and for water sanitation and shelter.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal as they begin the agonizing process of rebuilding their lives and their country” said Premier MacLauchlan.
